What are Breathing Emergencies?

Breathing emergencies can arise from a variety of conditions and scenarios, ranging from acute incidents such as choking to complications arising from chronic diseases such as asthma. Here are some common types of breathing emergencies:  

Asthma Attack
    • Symptoms: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness.
    • Causes: Allergens, infection, exercise, cold air, etc.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Exacerbation
    • Symptoms: Increased shortness of breath, increased sputum production, change in sputum color, etc.
    • Causes: Respiratory infections, air pollution, etc.
Pneumonia
    • Symptoms: Cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing.
    • Causes: Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
Anaphylaxis
    • Symptoms: Rapid onset of difficulty breathing, swollen tongue or throat, wheezing, etc.
    • Causes: Severe allergic reaction to food, insect bites, medication, etc.
Pulmonary Edema

Foreign Object Aspiration (Choking)

Pneumothorax (Collapsed Lung)
    • Symptoms: Sharp chest pain, shortness of breath.
    • Causes: Injury to the chest, lung disease, spontaneous collapse, etc.
Epiglottitis
    • Symptoms: Difficulty swallowing, drooling, difficulty breathing.
    • Causes: Infection, injury to the throat, etc.
Croup
    • Symptoms: A “barking” cough, hoarseness, difficulty breathing.
    • Causes: Viral infection, typically in young children.
